About Me

Hello,

I'M John Gregor

I have been working professionally as a photographer and photographic educator for 40 years. During that time I have worked on some amazing projects and with many incredible clients.

My passion is nature, landscape, and travel photography. I have been lucky to work with several wonderful conservation organizations and every year I donate a portion of my proceeds to selected conservation organizations that work hard to protect the natural landscape.

I have been based in northern Minnesota for most of the 40 years of my career, however, I have now arranged my lifestyle to accommodate lots of travel. These days I split my time based in Two Harbors Minnesota, Bluff Utah, and Mexico.

You can learn more about my Photographic Workshops and Classes at: www.coldsnapphotography.com

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration

These images were created using Digital SLR cameras. While I enjoy the immediacy of this format I reject the notion of streamlining my workflow. Each image has been individually and carefully created, from concept to final print.   I enjoy the high degree of precision and accuracy that modern digital cameras allow for in image making. When I compose a photograph I utilize that precision. The camera angle and view is carefully considered. All of the visual elements within the scene are considered and arranged for a predetermined visual effect. At times I use neutral density filters which allow for long exposures, or I select slow ISO speeds and small aperture settings which also increases the exposure time even on bright days. Typical exposures can run from one to several minutes long. During the image making process I ponder over what filters, if any, to use for the creation of the image, and finally I carefully select my exposure settings for optimum visual effect. This process requires a significant amount of time and thought but it is my mantra in the meditation of image making. It soothes my mind and soul, and allows me to see the world in front of my lens. I enjoy the process of absolute control up to the moment the image is recorded—then I open the shutter and let go of the process—I never know what the final image will look like and I have to trust that forces greater than me will give me the gift of a beautiful image.
